Privacy Policy

This is a personal, self-hosted WordPress blog belonging to Chris Betcher. Its primary purpose is to act as a platform for the personal expression of my own ideas, and occasionally as a way of sharing the ideas of others. The site carries no advertising whatsoever, and there is no commercial intent behind this blog. That said, I obviously have my own personal opinions, preferences and biases which may sometimes be apparent in my writing but these should never be construed to be an endorsement of any particular product or service. This content is offered freely to anyone that wishes to read it, in a spirit of sharing and openness.

If you visit my site you should know that I have no interest in collecting or using whatever personal data you leave here. I do not intentionally collect any personal visitor data beyond that outlined below, which is the bare minimum to allow this site to function well.

My website address is: http://chrisbetcher.com.

What personal data I collect and why I collect it

Comments

When visitors leave comments on this blog I collect the data that represents those comments (obviously) but also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string. This is done solely to help with spam detection and elimination.

An anonymised string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, if you use Gravatar your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment. This functionality is a standard feature of WordPress.

Media

If you choose to upload images to the website, It’s best to avoid uploading images with any embedded location data (such as EXIF GPS data) included. Visitors to the website could potentially download and extract location data from images on the website. You probably don’t want that.

Cookies

If you leave a comment on this blog you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again should you decide to leave another comment at another time. These cookies will last for one year.

You can checkout the full policy regarding cookies here.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles and posts on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behave in the exact same way as if you had visited the other website.

These other websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracing your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website. Again, this is just how the web works.

Who I share your data with

Nobody. Ever. This is a personal blog, free for anyone to access, and it contains no advertising. I collect the bare minimum required to make this site function well, and I don’t make your data available to anyone else.

How long I retain your data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so I can recognise and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.
